BUT: GDOP has never been about an event only, it is about forming a lifestyle of prayer that leads to transformation on different levels. The strategy is built on the initial strategy of the first Church according to Acts 2: ten days of constant prayer leading to Pentecost, one dayof prayer witnessed by the whole city, and Days of blessing that followed.
By following this 3-fold strategy we are aiming to move into a deeper level of prayer by seeking a closer and more intimate relationship with God.
Our focus this week will be Ten Days of constant prayer: 13-22 May 2010.
Beginning on Ascension Day, millions of Christians will find ways to pray night and day throughout the 10 days leading up to Pentecost. The 10 Days helps us to gradually build a lifestyle of prayer in our communities, as well as to focus our prayers much wider than our personal and national needs as we pray with millions during this time. This is an encouraging time that creates the platform for unity as we unite with brothers and sisters from other churches, denominations and backgrounds.
How do we get involved? – In Africa we have a saying: “How do you eat an elephant?” – “Bit by bit”. Start slowly. Do not try and fill 24 hours of every day right from the start BUT please START and do encourage others to get involved!
A 10 Day prayer guide is downloadable in various formats from the website. To encourage you to involve youth and children we have made prayer guides available for them too (also available for download on the website.)
To help and motivate believers we have put together some GUIDELINES that are downloadable from the website as well.
May we saturate our nations with day and night prayer from 13 – 22 May as we prepare to gather in unity on 23 May.
Do not hesitate being creative. God’s spirit is a creative spirit. By the way, He created you!!

The Work of Prayer
Prayer in the first place is a relationship with God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. With regard to this relationship it is particularly the following elements of prayer that are at issue: worship, praise, reverence, repentance, gratitude, being quiet before God, and listening. All this concerns our relationship with Him and His grandeur, the honour and praise of His Name, having communion with Him and awaiting His guidance.
There is however also a second aspect of prayer, namely the labour aspect of it - the work of prayer. It concerns intercession in particular. Much emphasis is placed on prayer as a relationship with God - quite rightly so. But we should never forget that there is also a prayer labour to be undertaken. When we discuss the work aspect of prayer, the following elements (among others) are at issue: intercession, petition, supplication, spiritual warfare, and wrestling in prayer.
Note the following Scriptures in this regard:
2 Cor.1:11: "...as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favour granted us in answer to the prayers of many."
Rm.15:30: "I urge you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me."
Col.4:12: "Epaphras...is always wrestling in prayer for you that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured."
Col.1:9: "...for this reason since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you..."
1 Th.1:2-3: "We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in all our prayers. We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labour prompted by love and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ."
Is.62:6-7: "I have posted watchmen on your walls, o Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest, and give Him no rest till He establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth."
Ez.22:30: "I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so that I would not have to destroy it but I found none."
1 Tim.2:1: "I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for every one..."
The above Scriptures all contain references to the work of prayer, the task of intercession, and our labour in prayer. Prayer is hard work. Many people regard prayer as something very passive. However, when we really become involved in the work of prayer we will find that there is no work that is harder than praying. Whenever the Bible refers to the work aspect of prayer it does so by using words such as beseech/entreat, wrestle, struggle, watch, fervent praying, loud cries, and tears. These words imply labour, struggle and strain. Within the spiritual sphere there is certain labour to be performed which can be done by means of prayer only. When the work of prayer is not being done correctly and adequately all our other spiritual labour fails to a significant extent and remains largely ineffective.
Hudson Taylor on occasion said: "You can work without praying but that is a rather bad plan. You will, however, never be able to pray seriously without working." Work can never be replaced by prayer, just as prayer can never be replaced by work. The spiritual law that applies universally is: First pray, then work!
In one of his books Oswald Sanders refers to Jn.14:12-14 where Jesus says that we shall do even greater works than what He has done. Sanders is of the opinion that when Jesus speaks of "greater works," He does in fact refer to the work of prayer.
Why is the church so powerless? Why does it have so little effect in the world? Why can't the church succeed in taking the gospel to the unreached nations? Why is there such desolation in many churches? Why do people become converted but fail to grow to spiritual maturity? One of the single most important reasons for these conditions is the lack of prayer. The work of prayer is not done. People do not pray enough. The number of prayer warriors is too small compared to the amount of prayer work. Jas.4:2 says: "You do not have because you do not ask God." Prayer brings the blessing of God. A revival of prayer will bring about a revival of the blessing of the Lord. More purposeful, intelligent and persistent prayer will bear more spiritual fruit. It is when the church fails to perform the work of prayer persistently and effectively that the church also becomes powerless and ineffective. God has intended that through prayer the church should obtain the power that it needs to do its work.
God has included believers in His plan for redeeming the world. One of their tasks is to pray. Through prayer the Christian helps to establish the kingdom of God in this world. God needs intercessors to do the work of prayer. Unfortunately the church is neglecting the work of prayer and as a result also paying the price for this neglect. The work of prayer is spiritual work that needs to be done in the spiritual realm. Many people do not recognise the necessity of prayer and particularly of intercession because they cannot see with their physical eyes what happens in the spiritual realm. But the fact that we do not see immediate results many times does not mean that nothing happens when we pray. In fact God takes action when we pray.
Greater emphasis should be placed on the task of intercession. Believers should be made aware to an increasing extent of the results of intercession and the effects thereof.

The root of prayer is a relationship with God and it is from this perspective that the contents of this material should be viewed.

Pacific
Blow the Trumpet! - A Call for Repentance and Prayer - Joel 2

The last, but definitely not least of continents we want to focus on is the PACIFIC. Constituting 6.3% of the world’s land surface, there are 25 000 islands scattered over 88 million sq.km of ocean. Australia and New Zealand are affluent “first world” countries but all the other states range from wealthy to poor and some of the small populated nations have limited resources and vast distances between island states hold back development of most islands. In the light of this it is therefore understandable that communication and contact with locals are very difficult.
In spite of this, the Pacific was one of the first areas to be evangelized in the modern Protestant missionary ea. By the end of the 19th Century most of the region had become Christian through the sacrificial labours of early missionaries.

An urgent appeal is therefore made here that if anyone has contact with brothers and sisters in these islands nations, to inform them about the Global Day of Prayer and connect us with them if they are interested. (See the outstanding nations below)

Asia
As we pray for the continent of Asia this week, let us bear in mind that it is the world's largest and most populous continent, located in the eastern and northern hemispheres. It covers 8.6% of the earth's total surface area (or 29.9% of its land area) and with approximately 4 billion people, it hosts 60% of the world's current human population. (Wikipedia)
Asia is indeed a key region and with the Global Day of Prayer and many other initiatives we have seen a massive change in the spiritual atmosphere of these nations. God is surely ready to do a new thing amongst His people and He is not only changing the hearts of the Asian people, He is raising them up to be the biggest labor force in the Kingdom ever --- the final step in the completion of the Great Commission.
However in more than 2 thirds of the nations in Asia, Christians are suffering severe Persecution. It is therefore not strange that 8 of the top 10 persecuted nations on the World Wide List are Asian countries.
The Mission Statement of The Voice of the Martyrs (founded by Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand) is “Serving the Persecuted Church through practical and spiritual assistance while leading Christians in the free world into fellowship with them”. For many of us the only way to “fellowship” with them, is by praying for them.
Brother Andrew (also known as God’s Smuggler and founder of Open Doors International) once said: “The first thing persecuted Christians ask me for is prayer. Prayer transcends culture, race and gender. It is where heaven touches earth and the means by which we can have a profound effect on the lives of our persecuted Christian brothers and sisters.”

Africa
Dear Friends
This week we would like you to focus on Africa as we pray in unity across the globe:
Africa is the world's second-largest and second most-populous continent. Amidst a history of tribal war, slavery, colonialism, ancestral worship, witchcraft and a variety of different beliefs and religions, the Body of Christ in Africa is growing in this richly blessed continent.
On 2 May 2004 – from the North to the South – from the East to the West – more than 22 million people in all 56 countries of Africa gathered together to seek God’s Face. This was the realization of the fourth stage of the vision of GDOP.
Thus a canopy of prayer was raised across the continent when on the same day, at the same hour people raised their voice in the same prayer and from this continent came the invitation to the world to participate in the Global Day of Prayer every year on Pentecost Sunday.
Emergency Prayer Alert:
Let us pray for the city of Jos, Northern Nigeria.
More than three hundred people have been killed in just three days in the Nigerian city of Jos. Though the cause of this particular conflict has not been determined, it has again pitted Christians against Muslims, resulting in yet another deadly spree of violence. READ MORE

Latin America and the Caribbean
Our focus this week is on Latin America and the Caribbean. During the 20th Century, the Americas proved to be the most dynamic Christian continent. Especially in Latin America the growth of the Evangelicals in the 20th century has been spectacular. However there are certain “hot spots” that needs urgent prayer.
• The moral devastation caused by drug trafficking is corrupting all spheres of life and destroying the lives of millions of people.
• The unresolved issue of widespread poverty which was caused by economic progress that failed to filter down to the poor. Marxist guerrilla insurrections once plagued many countries but since 1990 these have reduced in number. This still leaved many democratic governments fragile and economies struggling in many countries.
• Centuries of wrongs against the indigenous peoples have caused civil wars where protest and revolt came from the repressed e.g. Guatemala and Peru.

Global Day of Prayer 23 May 2010 - A Celebration not to be missed
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance. From heaven the LORD looks down and sees all mankind; from his dwelling place he watches all who live on earth- 15 he who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.” (Psalm 33 : 12 – 15)
2010 sees the 10th Anniversary of the birth of God’s vision for a Day of Repentance and Prayer. Over the last 10 years we have seen how God has miraculously called His people from all nations to “humble themselves and pray” in unity on this one day.
On 31 May 2009 220 of the world’s nations participated on the Global Day of Prayer and it is our dream to see the same this year.
To celebrate His Story and to continue responding to His Call, we will be returning to the Newlands Rugby Stadium in Cape Town on Sunday, 23 May 2010 to celebrate the Global Day of Prayer event,– the venue where it all started!
Wouldn’t it be awesome if, apart from having all the nations in the world participating in GDOP, a couple from each of the nations could represent their country at the Stadium.

A 2-day conference will precede The Global Day of Prayer (20 & 21 May) where leaders from various networks and ministries (Prayer, Transformation, Mission, Church and Youth) are invited to share the ‘untold stories’ of the ‘unknown heroes of faith’ as we share in His Glory.

Blow the Trumpet! A Call for Repentance and Prayer ( Joel 2)
Europe is the third-most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population. It is a relatively secular continent and has the largest number and proportion of irreligious, agnostic and atheistic people in the Western world.
“There are many reasons we should pray. One is because God wants to bless others as a result of your prayers. The Bible says in 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV) “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and WILL HEAL THEIR LAND.” (emphasis added). In addition, God wants to bless youpersonally and prayer can open the door to God’s working in your life.
